I call this the Helbig Pauling process because this is a simple version of Pauling’s arc furnace, and the addition of a dialectic barrier discharge chamber (silent arc) for the generation of Ozone is Helbig’s discovery, the combination of Ozone and NO2 rapidly forms white N2O5 which makes it “very easy to obtain better than 80% HNO3 concentrations” (as reported by Helbig), by the reaction of di-nitrogen pentoxide with H2O, adding more ozone rapidly converts waste NO into N2O4 and N2O5, but i have not yet added the second ozone generator to capture the waste, as my first generator is not generating enough ozone to make a stoichiometric reaction . Im using the 2 neck reaction flask with no bubbler to react the Ozone and NO2 as well as currently reacting 170 grams of lead to lead nitrate for another process, its worth noting that without the ozone i was getting mostly lead nitrite a vivid yellow compound reactive with vigor by the addition of HNO3. On the close ups of the reaction flask, if you look closely you can see the formation of N2O5 as faint white smoke forming in pulsating waves, the pulse source being the arc chamber up top, the efficiency of the added ozone is well worth it, this reaction chamber has no bubbler and yet almost half of the 170 grams of lead chips has been converted in only 3 days.
